  2.  #45-56 The church is often like a ship at sea, tossed with
  3.  tempests, and not comforted: we may have Christ for us, yet wind
  4.  and tide against us; but it is a comfort to Christ's disciples
  5.  in a storm, that their Master is in the heavenly mount,
  6.  interceding for them. And no difficulties can hinder Christ's
  7.  appearance for his people, when the set time is come. He
  8.  silenced their fears, by making himself known to them. Our fears
  9.  are soon satisfied, if our mistakes are set right, especially
  10.  our mistakes as to Christ. Let the disciples have their Master
  11.  with them, and all is well. It is for want of rightly
  12.  understanding Christ's former works, that we view his present
  13.  works as if there never were the like before. If Christ's
  14.  ministers now could cure people's bodily diseases, what
  15.  multitudes would flock after them! It is sad to think how much
  16.  more most care about their bodies than about their souls.

  18.  * The traditions of the elders. (1-13) What defiles the man.
  19.  (14-23) The woman of Canaan's daughter cured. (24-30) Christ
  20.  restores a man to hearing and speech. (31-37)

  22.  #1-13 One great design of Christ's coming was, to set aside the
  23.  ceremonial law; and to make way for this, he rejects the
  24.  ceremonies men added to the law of God's making. Those clean
  25.  hands and that pure heart which Christ bestows on his disciples,
  26.  and requires of them, are very different from the outward and
  27.  superstitious forms of Pharisees of every age. Jesus reproves
  28.  them for rejecting the commandment of God. It is clear that it
  29.  is the duty of children, if their parents are poor, to relieve
  30.  them as far as they are able; and if children deserve to die
  31.  that curse their parents, much more those that starve them. But
  32.  if a man conformed to the traditions of the Pharisees, they
  33.  found a device to free him from the claim of this duty.

  36.  #14-23 Our wicked thoughts and affections, words and actions,
  37.  defile us, and these only. As a corrupt fountain sends forth
  38.  corrupt streams, so does a corrupt heart send forth corrupt
  39.  reasonings, corrupt appetites and passions, and all the wicked
  40.  words and actions that come from them. A spiritual understanding
  41.  of the law of God, and a sense of the evil of sin, will cause a
  42.  man to seek for the grace of the Holy Spirit, to keep down the
  43.  evil thoughts and affections that work within.

  46.  #24-30 Christ never put any from him that fell at his feet,
  47.  which a poor trembling soul may do. As she was a good woman, so
  48.  a good mother. This sent her to Christ. His saying, Let the
  49.  children first be filled, shows that there was mercy for the
  50.  Gentiles, and not far off. She spoke, not as making light of the
  51.  mercy, but magnifying the abundance of miraculous cures among
  52.  the Jews, in comparison with which a single cure was but as a
  53.  crumb. Thus, while proud Pharisees are left by the blessed
  54.  Saviour, he manifests his compassion to poor humbled sinners,
  55.  who look to him for children's bread. He still goes about to
  56.  seek and save the lost.
